the sacrament of
the anointing of the sick
Traditionally referred to as Extreme Unction or Last Rites, since it was requested primarily when a person was thought to be near the time of death. However, the Anointing of the Sick is also administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during a severe illness or when a person is to undergo a critical surgery or treatment. This sacrament unites a sick person’s suffering with that of Jesus Christ and brings forgiveness of sins. This sacrament can be repeated in as much as it is required due to a change in the state of a person’s health. It is most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive. Oil, a symbol of strength, is the sign of this sacrament. A person is anointed with oil and receives the laying on of hands from a priest.
