Every Sunday, God speaks to us. Are we listening? God’s Word is spoken…What best describes your experience with His Word… The seed (God’s Word) falls along the path (Luke 8:12) Some seeds may grow to maturity but what a struggle? Constantly stepped on, or uprooted seems to be their eternal fate. The seed (God’s Word) falls on the rock (Luke 8:13) A rocky soil receives the Word with joy, yet it never lets the Word penetrate its depths. Ever go home after mass and forget what God said to you? His Word simply didn’t take root. You may have felt good for a short time but the feeling diminished as life’s responsibilities took over. One of life’s most awesome experiences is seeing God’s Word stand up under trial. He wants to show us it works. He wants to show us He works! The seed fall among the thorns (Luke 8:14) The thorns can be compared to the distractions of the world: worries, riches, pleasures. Christian life is not entirely sacrificial. We are not all called to be martyrs, in the general sense of the word. We are called to know and understand God’s message. “…[thorns]… they also don’t mature.” (Luke 8:14 )The word mature comes from two Greek words: telos, meaning “end, goal, perfection,” and phero, meaning, “to bring, bear.” The hearers of the Word who are distracted by the constant call of the world, will struggle to allow God’s awesome plan for their lives unfold. No mind has even conceived, “what God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) The seed falls on good soil ((Luke 8:15) The good soil represents the one who hears the Word and retains it. When God’s Word is deliberately internalized, it will be authentically externalized because it’s no longer what we do- it’s part of who we are. On the Feast of Corpus Christi…we are reminded that when we come to the table of the Lord, unlike regular food which becomes ingested when eaten, the Eucharist becomes part of who we are. At the Eucharistic meal, we become part of the food served; we become what we consume. When we hear God’s Word, we become what we hear. When the Lord sends forth His Word, may He find fertile soil in each of us. And when the Harvest comes, may we all be joyful. As Christians, we believe that the WORD of God we hear proclaimed each Sunday is an empowering Word, and that God is present in the Word proclaimed. The dynamic of the Faith Sharing Community, namely, is reflecting on our life-story within the context of this Word, and sharing the insights of these reflections, is such that God’s Spirit becomes present, and the gifts of the Spirit are experienced as empowering and life-giving.
