While two national consultations are ongoing in the wake of the decision of the Supreme Court (February 2015) in the Carter case – which struck down the law prohibiting physician-assisted suicide – and while Quebec’s Department of Health is preparing to distribute to the province’s physicians a guide which will help them to euthanize patients, many citizens are beginning to realize that the end of life debate will have very concrete consequences in their life and in those of their loved ones. The Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF) strongly encourages all those who recognize the inherent and inalienable dignity of the human person, and who refuse to sit idly by as civilization regresses, to express their views to the following:
Following October’s federal election, unless an extension is requested from the Supreme Court, the next government will have until February 6, 2016 to enact a law on “medical aid in dying”. Otherwise Canada will be in a legal vacuum which will allow unlimited access to euthanasia and assisted suicide (as is the case with abortion). We cannot emphasize too strongly the importance of raising our voices as citizens at this crucial juncture in the democratic life of our country! Our responsibility is great since it is up to us to bring Christ’s transforming action to the heart of the world. In its 2015 Federal Election Guide, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops clearly states that “. . . informed and responsible citizens engage in an ongoing dialogue on major social issues with their political leaders. This is precisely the kind of community we should strive to support and develop. No less is expected of us, since we are all called to be truly responsible for one another, especially for the most vulnerable members of our society”. We invite you to visit COLF’s website in order to deepen your knowledge of euthanasia and assisted suicide, and to participate in the “Life Giving Love”campaign. Let us pray together for the protection of human life! CATHOLIC ORGANIZATION FOR LIFE AND FAMILY Building a Civilization of Love www.colf.ca
